WHO WE ARE
We are the UC Santa Barbara Chapter of Delta Epsilon Mu - the nation’s premier professional pre-health all-inclusive fraternity. The members of Delta Epsilon Mu have a wide range of pre-health interests that include, but are not limited to: medicine, nursing, psychology, physical therapy, and dentistry. Delta Epsilon Mu unites its members through brotherhood as they develop both leadership and professional skills.
Message from the President:
On behalf of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Delta Epsilon Mu, I welcome you to a year of introspection, growth, and connection.
We are a place for reflection. As much as this organization is a grounding home base for members to express the realities and challenges of the undergraduate and eventually career professional experience, it is also dynamic. We are the Fraternity, which means who we are evolving into is also constantly progressing. Nurturing the space to be gentle with ourselves as we move along the oftentimes bumpy pre-health road, we motivate one another to tackle that which may initially appear impossible. A beautiful aspect of ΔEM is that it invites those who share in this spirit, welcoming those of all backgrounds, majors, tracks, personalities, and interests. No two Siblings join for the same reason, and thus all contribute an irreplaceable narrative to our collective history.
Throughout any stage of membership and involvement, we ask ourselves why we became interested, why we joined, and why we stayed in ΔEM. From my first quarter in college to my current term as President, from changes of major to joining other campus subcommunities, ΔEM has been a part of my life for every transitory stage. My self-understanding, relationships, and this Fraternity have been subsequently remodeled each time. Looking inward first, we strive to foster future health professionals who constantly think about those they serve and why they do so.
Above all, we seek to serve the community and those under the banner of health receiving and aiding. Community necessitates engagement, which entails interest and passion in doing justice to those who compose the spaces within which we identify. This requires us to contribute consistently and interactively, forging genuine bonds with those who share enthusiasm for connecting heart-to-heart with our community. Whether through fundraising bake-offs, garden beautification, care pack assembling, or beyond, ΔEM and our partners collaborate creatively. Thank you to our philanthropic and community service partners, National Fraternity, and fellow Gauchos who remind us who we are working to serve.
The prerequisite for coming together under the banner of ΔEM is, of course, education. We begin all new journeys as learners, finding our own ways of embracing and navigating the changes we face along our personal and academic endeavors. The adventure is rarely simple, and it will ask you many questions, some you may spend your life answering. One thing I know for certain is I am grateful for the ability to have an education. Accessing the knowledge which many have worked so hard to make available is a privilege. In this vein, I express my deepest thanks for our members past and present who have brought us into the fold and under their wing, mentoring the future with the authenticity of experience and generosity in empathy for having once been in our shoes.
Finally, we are a reflection of our predecessors, continued supporters, and successors. Delta Epsilon Mu, Inc. and ΔEM Alpha Sigma have translated the pillars through their health career journeys since 1996 and 2019, respectively. As a Chapter, we would like to express immense gratitude for our Chapter Founders and National Fraternity, as well as all Alumni Members who have provided us with the foundation necessary for expansion. Moreover, we are a direct result of the people who shape and believe in us every step of our paths. Thank you to our friends and family for recognizing our true selves when we are blinded by transient worries.
The people who compose our Fraternity are also those we call family. We are forever united through a shared siblinghood that we carry into all future endeavors as flames of unity, no matter how physically distant we venture. In the end, we are eternally bound by the Loyalty, Dedication, Friendship, and Support to which we commit ourselves to serving as future health professionals. I am honored in the trust bestowed upon me to ask you to join us for this transformative journey. Although I wish I could articulate every way that Delta Epsilon Mu has changed my life, I invite you to experience it for yourself and discover your own meaning.
